The King is dead. Long live the King.
The year 313 has come to a close and with it, the greatest tragedy Tortall has faced in recent years. King Jasson was kidnapped in a plot arranged by his own cousin, Duke Joren, who wished to take the throne for himself. Though Jasson's body was never found, he has been presumed dead and those involved in his disappearance have been executed. The realm must move on from this tragedy, and on the first day of the year 314, Geoffrey of Conté will take the throne.
King Geoffrey will face many issues in his first year on the throne - the lingering doubts and fears of a country faced with treason, the changing political landscape of a world turning to peace, the outcry of progressives as the conservatives fight to oppress their daughters - but he will not rule alone. For the first time in Tortallan history, four queens stand at his side - his wife, his mother, his grandmother and his brother's widow. Few remember the mosaic embedded in the floor of one of the oldest rooms in the castle picturing four similar queens. No one alive recalls the prophecy that accompanied it.
Though these acts of treason are over, their effects continue to ripple outward into the realm. Innocent lives were lost in Joren's grab for power and the families demand justice. Foreign relations with Tusaine are tense after members of their court were executed for their involvement. And deep within the seediest parts of the capital city, another court reigns - the Court of the Rogue. They too are ready for a new ruler...
Thus stands Tortall - a noble realm poised on the edge of a new era. Will they embrace change or stand by tradition? Will they pursue peace with their neighbors or attack while defenses are down? Will the nobles follow their new king or pursue their own agenda? History can never be rewritten but the future changes every day. Tortall stands at a crossroads and every turn could mean the end of a dynasty or the dawning of a golden age. While it may seem that we are all the masters of our own fates, we must ask ourselves - in the end are we all just pawns in the Hand of the Gods?
